Westore has been nominated by Green Cape as a candidate for the Earthshot Prize, an ambitious global prize for the environment, designed to discover, celebrate and scale the best solutions to help repair our planet.
The Earthshot Prize will consider solutions that make tangible progress towards one of the five Earthshots. They should be beyond the idea stage, have tested their solution in-field or with target audiences, and are at a ‘tipping point’ for scaling their impact within the next five years in one of the following fields:
1. Protect and Restore Nature
2. Clean our Air
3. Revive our Oceans
4. Build a Waste-Free World
5. Fix our Climate
Westore is proud to partake in the category “Fix our Climate” with our affordable energy storage solutions that accelerate the uptake of renewables, extend the viability of renewables, and ultimately replace the use of fossil fuels as a primary energy source in Africa.
Considering that more than 500 million people in Africa do not have access to reliable and affordable energy, we also endeavor to deliver on the two key UN Sustainable Development Goals, SDG-7 “Affordable and Clean Energy” access in Africa and SDG-13 “Climate Action” in Africa.
In order for us to achieve these ambitious goals, we have to consider the sustainability of our solutions. One of the key themes we want to drive is the recyclability of the solutions that we use in delivering energy access and climate action as we cannot trade one for the other.
Noting the importance of this tradeoff, Lithium-based batteries cannot currently be recycled in Africa and there is no short-term prospect for the investment in recycling infrastructure to do so. Our intention is to deliver solutions that provide access and climate action through a responsible and sustainable value chain and we have invested in delivering our advanced lead-acid batteries to achieve this with its 99% recyclability and existing recycling infrastructure and value chain in Africa.
As a nominee of the Earthshot prize we make the commitment to not follow the status quo in search of profit, but to create wealth that transcends a value chain agenda.
